Photo Contest: Jan. ~  2010

1-

2-

3-

These three photos were taken over the last several years at uptown jazz clubs and feature personalities integral to the success of that scene.

One individual is no longer with us; one is locked up- accused (I believe wrongly) of terrorism; and one is improvising on a tight rope nightly and deserves some long-overdue recognition for his contributions.  Can you name them?  Bonus Question: who is pictured as a reflection playing sax in photo #2?

Email me your answers to gordon@bigapplejazz.com for photo #1,#2,#3.  Up to 5 winners will receive an autographed CD, Dream Awhile, from Audrey Silver, a local singer also deserving wider recognition.  Return to the photo contest page to see the results of contest winners, or wait for the next newsletter.  Please sign up to receive the Keep Me in the Loop Letter

Contest ends on January 27, 2010.

ANSWERS:

The first photo is of Tariq Shah, who is serving up to 15 years for terrorism.  He is absolutely one of the nicest guys I know from the Harlem jazz scene, and a hell of a bass player; and I would be very interested in hearing his side of the story.  I'm sure he had a weak lawyer.  I'll keep you posted.  And please keep me posted.

The second photo is of Nelson, who passed away a year or so ago.  He used to manage St. Nick's Pub.  They hung that photo of him from the 70's on the club's wall with the caption stating THE MAN.  Cool shot!  (That's Salim Washington reflected onstage playing tenor with Donald Smith's band on a recent Friday night).

The third photo is of the man MCing many of the shows at St. Nick's Pub, and when he's not, he's reading everything he can get his hands on and transforming all the new knowledge into freestyle raps to the jazz rhythms that surround him onstage.  His name is Floyd Brian Davis.  The photo was taken at a show on the Minton's Playhouse stage.
